Site history

Over the years, these ponds have been known locally as the Beaver Ponds, and by other names.

The 30s

The land around them was likely logged in the 30s and right to the edge of the ponds.

By 1985

By 1985 they were quite out of the way and surrounded by a very rural atmosphere. The 50-year-old forest was young and extended without clearcuts, all the way up the Hump.

Beavers since at least the 1980s

Beavers have lived at the ponds since at least the 1980s, and possibly longer.

By 2005

By 2005, the owner of the property around the ponds decided to log it and sell it leaving a thin fringe of older trees around the ponds.

Despite heavy ecological impacts in the past, the ponds have recovered enough to support a wide diversity of life. Conservation efforts will allow the surrounding forest to continue recovering and maintain habitat for the species that live there.
